imagesMany businesses do not realize that the Chamber of Commerce they are a part of may offer multiple areas to display their URL and company information. Considering most chamber of commerce sites have a high domain authority, your site will absorb the recognition and ride the coat tails of the chamber of commerce’s domain authority as well.

Besides listing your site URL in their Business Directory, most Chamber of Commerce sites have other areas for events, community calendar, job postings and news/updates – all areas to list your URL and your site’s landing pages you are trying to drive traffic to.

Say you are a booking agency looking to increase you web presence. By joining your local area(s) Chamber of Commerce you are able to place your site’s URL all over the chamber site. For the directory listing, use your main URL, but when looking for traffic to other parts of your website, creating landing pages will boost traffic and rankings throughout your website. If you want your booking agency to be known for your events both online, offline and word of mouth, the best way is to have a main event landing page with a unique URL that includes links to each of your events.
Once the events landing page is created, place each and every single upcoming event your booking agency is having, using the main Events landing page URL on the chamber site’s event calendar. Make sure to place the Event landing page’s URL in the blurb as well as the URL field (if applicable). Then, create and place each of those events into the community calendar as well, which will double the placement of your events and maximize the appearance of your Events landing page URL.

To increase even more traffic to your website, create landing pages for other categories such as news/updates and job postings, encompassing log/newsfeed and job opportunities to post on the chamber site as well.

Tips on how to optimize your keywords in your content and titles for these landing pages in regards to Chamber websites will be in my next blog on Dec 13th!

Surveillance-Cameras-Aluminum-Sign-K-2263If you own a brick and mortar business chances are you lock it when you leave and take every precaution to keep it secure.  Perhaps you install cameras or an alarm system or hire a security guard to watch over the building in the off hours.  What about doing the same for your website?

Technology advances each year.

Code can become outdated and vulnerable.

Content Management Systems (CMS) are constantly being updated as the latter change

When is the last time you thought about maintaining your website?  It is important that necessary updates are managed to avoid downtime from applications breaking or hackers from targeting your site.  Google knows when a website is compromised and it will flag it.

So what options do you have as business owner?

  1. Do it yourself, but you’ll have to understand a little bit about web development, your CMS and troubleshooting if updates don’t go as planned.
  2. Use a hosting provider that will automatically update your website for you. Only for a CMS platform such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, but not a static html site.  These types of hosting services are more expensive and can run $30 per month or more.
  3. Hire a web developer to manage the monthly or quarterly maintenance updates.

At Mid-West Digital, we encourage all clients to consider maintenance and we’ve cleaned up many sites that have been hacked because they have not been maintained.  Our team of experienced web developers can watch over your website or get it back on track.  Let us know if you need help!

screen-shot-2010-10-23-at-10-00-11-pmI’ve lived in 6 different cities in the past 3 years. Moving to Madison this summer was the same drill: unpack my boxes, set up wi-fi, and start to orient myself in my new location. I instantly Google “japanese takeout madison wi” on my smart phone to find my new favorite dinner spot. After settling down with some miso soup and sushi, I use my laptop to search where to get coffee on my route to work in the morning, which fitness club has yoga classes, and where the nearest bookstore is.

How are you going to convert me from a clueless newbie to a loyal customer? Whether I hear you on the radio, see your ad on Google, or read a friend’s recommendation on Facebook, I’m going to have to find out about you somewhere. You can’t just rely on the phone-book or a brochure site to get new leads anymore. You need an integrated marketing strategy to drive business and create loyalty. Here’s how to get found:

 Develop a Strategy

Who is your target audience? What do you want them to do on your website? What does conversion mean to you? What kind of results are you looking for? How are you going to measure those results? These are critical questions to ask yourself before starting a marketing campaign.

Build a Website

To begin to develop an online presence, you must first build a website. A fast site with easy navigation and clear, strong calls to action is vital. Just last week I was trying to order a sub for delivery, and I ended up going to this company’s direct competition because they made me jump through too many hoops to place my order. You’re losing business if your site takes too long to load!

Brand with Radio

An integrated strategy doesn’t just mean digital marketing. By advertising on the radio, you are reaching thousands of targeted listeners each week, and your branding message is burning itself into their minds subconsciously. Radio creates Top of the Mind Awareness – next time someone is in need of products or services that you provide are you going to be the first business they think of to type into the search bar?

Increase Visibility with Search Engine Optimization

Now that your audience is hearing about you on the radio, you need to make sure your website is getting found when users are searching for you on Google. By optimizing all of the pages on your website it will soar to the top of search engine result pages. Who actually clicks to the second page of Google anyway?

Engage community with Social Media

Social media is not all about how many fans your page has, it’s how your page engages its fans. Create valuable content that is relevant to your followers, or else they’re not going to ‘like’ you. Social media can also a great customer service outlet – by resolving issues in a timely matter you are shaping opinions about the way you build relationships with your customers.

Establish expertise with Blog

By regularly posting relevant content, you are showing the online world that you know what you’re talking about. When it comes to your industry in your market, you’re a leader because you’re providing valuable resources to your customers.

Where are you on the vast spectrum of digital marketing? Am I reading your blog and laughing at your response to my tweet, or am I still waiting for your site to load?

Talk to a marketing strategist like me today so we can help you find the opportunities your business is missing out on.

How to Connect with the Uber-Connected

Having been aggressively marketed to our entire lives, twenty-somethings are one of the hardest groups of people to sell to. We’re super-savvy about a lot of things, we’re well informed, and we’re immune to most traditional marketing techniques. We know that you’re trying to sell us something, and we’re pretty good at sniffing out phonies. However, just because we know what you’re up to doesn’t mean we’re against it. We want to be marketed to, and we expect it! We want emails about discounts, we expect that your daily specials will be posted to your website and social networking pages. We are constantly surfing the web on our smartphones and tablets – if you want to reach us you’ve got to meet us there.

Don’t Be a Dinosaur

Having a Facebook page isn’t enough. If you haven’t posted in months, you lose credibility and our interest. If your website takes too long to load, my ADHD mind is already on your competitor’s page. Not only that, but I’ll probably tweet about how slow your site is, so that my entire network will hear my complaint. My generation is so over-stimulated by all the information being thrown at us, only select tidbits will get through to us, and if you don’t capture our attention quickly enough, your efforts will be in vain.

 Target our Lifestyle

Once you’ve gotten on board with social media marketing, in order to reach us you need to target our lifestyle. Just like the professor that uses beer as an example in lecture becomes our friend, if you relate to us you will engage us. Use the rule of thirds when posting to Facebook – 1/3 about your business, 1/3 about community, and 1/3 about your industry. We’re not going to like your Facebook page if all you’re doing is selling. If you’re posting funny pictures and relevant information we will like your posts, and if you’re lucky we might even share it for our friends to see.

 Give us Free Stuff

Since college kids would rather spend their money on important things like beer and pizza instead of your products or services, we aren’t likely to try a new product that isn’t hyped up unless they get a sample, free trial, or discount.  Social media is a giant word-of-mouth platform, so if you sell one of us, the rest will follow. This can be a great way to get your business noticed; however, if the response is negative, it snowballs and can be detrimental to your image. If you’re not monitoring your digital presence, you can’t control or react to negative tweets or posts.

Our Parents Still Help Us Out

Most twenty-somethings are either still in college or paying off student loans, so money is tight. Many of us still call Mom or Dad for help or extra spending money. We could like your products or services, but our parents probably need to be convinced since they’re the ones paying the bill. One of our clients, Fresh Madison Market, a local grocery store in Madison, promotes gift baskets to parents.  The parents can purchase a bunch of goodies for their kids and have it sent to their door. Parents love the convenience of the system, and appreciate Fresh Madison Market for helping them out.

If you fail to connect with us, you risk missing out on the next generation of college-educated consumers. We may be poor college kids now, but we’ll soon be making some serious money. If you’re branding effectively, you’ll be at the top of our mind when we’re making purchases down the line. Here at Mid-West Digital Marketing we can help you come up with an effective marketing strategy to reach and engage with whatever your target audience may be so you aren’t missing out on any business opportunities.

Smashing Magazine just posted a very in depth article on upgrading your web browser that I would highly suggest checking out. If your browser is out-of-date, there are so many things that you are missing out on! Here are just a few…update your web-browsers

Older browsers take longer time to load websites due to the way that they handle different scripts and file types. This can also cause your browser to lock up and crash. Something that is always frustrating when you are browsing around online.

Then there is the cool stuff! HTML5 & CSS3 animations, for example, allow designers & developers to create motion in a website without using third party applications like Flash. There are also various text effects that allow us to create a more dramatic look to a page without the use of images.

With faster page loading, less crashing, and great new web technologies, you and your browser will see a lot more action.

Here are the links to the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox.
