Don’t Hire a Doofenshmirtz

I have to admit, I’m a bit of a fan of a Disney cartoon my kids watch called Phineas and Ferb. It’s quite a popular cartoon, so I don’t think I’ll bore you with a Cliff Notes explanation of the characters and plot. However, if you’ve never had the pleasure of viewing an episode, I suggest you purchase cable and spend about three to five hours in front of the boob tube to get the full effect.

One of characters I get the biggest kick out of is Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, the bumbling mad scientist that battles a secret agent Platypus, and tries to take over the Tri-State Area with his never ending series of inventions, affectionately referred to as… INATORS; (the “Gloom-INATOR, the Combine-INATOR etc).

What concerns me lately is that in the world of Digital marketing…life is imitating art. Through my discussions with prospects and clients, I’m finding more and more companies are entering the digital landscape, with their own versions of INATORS. The “Guaranteed 90 clicks a month –INATOR”; the “one and done optimizer-INATOR”; the “guaranteed page one paid search- INATOR”, and so on.

We’ve all heard the line, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”. Look, there are a lot of smart companies out there, that have created unique, and in some cases, very useful tools. However, none of these tools work without effort and the human element. Meaning, really good Digital Marketing firms use the good ole’ combination of creative thought, technical know-how, marketing tactics and tools,  to not only develop a sound on-line marketing campaign, but achieve measurable results. Hard work and effort equals success. And yes, some INATORs can help in the process, but they’re not the all-in-one solution. In this business there is no “magic bullet”.

So the next time you get a phone call, or email guaranteeing THE solution for your digital marketing woe’s…tell them they can peddle their “INATORS” somewhere else. Don’t hire a Doofenshmirtz.
