As a web developer, I find that most clients don’t put a lot of thought into the functionality of their website. There is usually a lot of time spent reorganizing and moving pages around after everything has already been built. I compare it to relocating the bathroom in your brand new house after the plumbing has been completed. Do a little bit of research and then put your plans on paper just like you would a set of blueprints. Develop your idea in the same way that you would a house.
Start with the main pages that you want to direct the user to. These are the foundation of the website that you will build from. Pages such as Home, Blog, About Us, and Contact Us fall into this category.
The next step is to decide if you need to expand each of these categories into additional pages, or rooms. Here is where you can be more specific regarding the topic by adding pages dedicated to individual employees, products, or locations. Each page can then be broken down again if needed.
Now that the pages have been decided on and mapped out, we need to add the doorways to connect them all. Do you want to display recent blog posts on your home page? How about a featured employee on the About Us page? These are all things that need to be considered before the design and development of your site even begins. A well thought out website can save you a lot of time and money in the development process.
