Feeling Used, Being Used?

Do you Google, Bing, Yahoo or something else? I use Google and typed “how many search engines are there” to figure out my search engine choices. Google provided me 96,300,000 websites with those words in it to choose from. Really?!? I’m never going to look at 99.99997% of the results and the first 3 websites didn’t really answer my question.

Does any else ask this question I wondered? According to Google Adwords, those words are typed 880 times a month in the whole world. Therefore, yes other people do wonder. In the list of similar searches were the words “List of search engines” and those words were typed 90,500 times a month. Back to Google I go, type those words and presto; the website www.listofsearchengines.com  gave me an answer I could live with. There are 254 search engines. That’s a lot of competition for your search attention. Many of the search engines on the list I had never heard of. Others I don’t consider a search engine such as Craigslist.

254 search engines exist because each one believes they have something unique to offer and believe it will make them money or perform a service not filled by the other 253 search engines.

Here is the breakdown of search engine usage from Statowl.com

Google wins. That doesn’t mean the others lose.

Here is how this relates to your business. Compile a list of competitors for your business. Make sure you add businesses that are competitors to you in your customers view and actions, but you don’t think they are. If your list is not at least 50 businesses, then may I suggest you are not seeing the whole picture of the world around you from your customer’s view. Now take each business and write what they do well and don’t do well. If you don’t know, figure out how to interact with the business to find out.

Read your list.

When you choose to start seeing your competitors for what they are; you will see with more clarity who you are. When you know who you are, so will potential customers. When you know who you are; you can articulate that on your website, with people face to face or any other place you tell people why they should do business with you.
